The G’Vaot Integrative Community
Sadnat Shiluv, ‘the Sadna,’ " is in the settlement of "Giv'ot", on the western slopes of Gush Etzion. Central to life in this village is a socially unique community: fifty families who have chosen "integration" as their way of life and who believe in the enormous value of raising their children in an inclusive community where people with disabilities are perceived as equal friends.
The residents of the Sadna are fully integrated into the community: each of them receives an adoptive family who host him on a weekly basis; they hold positions tailored to them in the various communal institutions such as the synagogue or the local library; they live in close proximity and positive neighborliness to the families of the community and fully participate in the ceremonies, events and community experiences – from the Independence Day ceremony, to the local trip, and the public entertainment events.
We believe and realize how everyone is going to reap the benefits of this co-existence , and not just those who are different from us; The wonderful ability to live naturally alongside the “other” enriches and benefits all members of the community. The pace of life in the community is diverse, at a different pace, in a world where everything is extremely fast. We see how the ability for tolerance and listening to others is being mastered in our community, not only if he has special needs. This is a quality that is unfortunately still lacking in the general community.
Although the Sadna community is housed within an educational institution, it is run as a community for all intents and purposes. It is managed by a cooperative association, has a secretary and community and integration coordinator, and directs the interaction and joint work with the housing system and those with special needs.
